Marc Mondavi

Marc Mondavi, co-proprietor and third generation member of the family who owns and operates Charles Krug Winery, oversees vineyards and winemaking for the company.

The eldest son of Peter and Blanche Mondavi, Marc Mondavi was born in1954 in St. Helena. He caught the family winemaking bug early in life, holding his first official winery position at age 10.

Marc studied viticulture and enology at the University of California, Davis, and marketing at California State University, Sacramento.

Marc returned to the winery in 1978 after his studies, at which time he immersed himself in every aspect of winery operations. He worked with his father to further his knowledge of winemaking, and applied the expertise he had acquired at UC Davis to the winery's extensive vineyard holdings.

In addition to overseeing winemaking and a busy travel schedule, Marc manages the family's 850 acres of prime Napa Valley vineyards. These vineyard holdings span the Napa Valley, from the Carneros district in the south to St. Helena in the north.

As Marc sees it, his situation is straightforward. "The Charles Krug Winery and Peter Mondavi family have a winemaking and grape growing tradition," he says. "I'm now firmly a part of that tradition, as I hope my children will be after me. This is a source of pride, and constitutes the reason we work so hard to make the best wine this valley can produce."

Marc is active in the Wine and Food Society of San Francisco, and has served as secretary and member of the board of the Winery Workers Pension Fund and president of the Winery Employers Association. He has also served on the boards of the Wine Institute and the California Wine Commission, and was logistics chairman for the Napa Valley Wine Auction in 1988 and 1989.
