Phase I of Restoration Nears Completion

ST. HELENA, CA. June 1, 2008 - Multiple accomplishments over the past six months are making the completion of Phase I a reality. As is usual in any construction project, delays are common and we are now looking at mid-June to open the Carriage House for use by Patty as she begins to coordinate events. Adolfo as well will surely be thrilled as the Redwood Cellar is available at harvest time for barrel storage.
Here are some highlights of what has been going on behind the restoration scene.
On December 5th, the golden spire weather vane for the Redwood Cellar was re-mounted onto the pinnacle of the cupola. For strength and durability, automobile paint was used on the spire, and the old sphere at the top, which was actually a brass plunger float, was replaced with a real sphere. On the next windy day, watch the weather vane arrow respond to the wind direction.
Along with this wonderful sight, look at the difference between the curved, smooth roof face of the cupola and the main roof, an efficient corrugated pattern that provides excellent drainage and structural integrity.
The laborious task of installing the plumbing pipes, trench drains, electrical and the cement slab on the main floor is complete. The six inch north and south trenches and the center 12" drain will allow proper water flow for fermentation and processing when the cellar undergoes the next phase of construction for wine production.
Inside the Carriage House, the structural and seismic work is complete. Adjacent to the main entrance a new elevator will be installed and we will have use of the upper floor for events. A festive atmosphere is guaranteed with four double doors that open to the outside to views of the winery and vineyards. Milled redwood planks from some of the cellar's redwood fermentation tanks will soon line the vaulted walls and the elevator area, giving the second story an elegant dining atmosphere. A solid two-inch redwood floor with an energy efficient hydronic heating system and two custom chandeliers will complete the room.
Downstairs, the changes will be less dramatic but improved. An energy efficient heater will replace the old heater system, and, like the Redwood Cellar, total restoration of the windows and doors is finished.
Outside the new barbecue has been started; the beams for the roof are place and the remainder is scheduled for completion in June.
Lastly, although not a part of the restoration, our new front entrance is complete. Janice Mondavi led the team for the construction and design, and her vision melds the character of our historical structures beautifully as the stone used was chosen to match the stone in the Redwood Cellar. A recirculating water fountain flows over the back brushed steel panel and cascades behind the raised lettering of the winery for a tranquil effect. The olive tree adjacent to the entrance is believed to be at least 150 years old. It was moved from the southern edge of the winery and was possibly planted by Charles Krug himself.
