$401,000 Auction Bid for Historic Blending of Brother's Barrel
June 7, 2005 - "The annual Auction Napa Valley extravaganza has come to a close," said Peter Mondavi, Jr. following the 25th anniversary auction that guarantees health care and housing for many families in the Napa Valley wine industry. He added that "the preliminary results are in and the auction raised over $10 million! The greatest news is that the joint lot between my Father and Robert Mondavi garnered $401,000 for 10 cases of wine, the third highest bid for the auction! This was the last and highest lot that Jay Leno auctioned off adding to the excitement."
In addition to the 10 cases of wine produced from the barrel, the winning bidder and guests will enjoy three dinners with Peter, Sr. and Robert Mondavi as the wine ages in its French oak barrel.
The following description of Lot 414 illustrates the brothers' commitment to the production of the barrel.
"ANCORA UNA VOLTA"
This lot is an historical opportunity to celebrate the unique contribution of Peter Mondavi of Charles Krug Winery and Robert Mondavi who have graced the Napa Valley wine scene for over 130 years. Their brotherly bond is strong again. These two pioneers come together "ancora una volta" to create this great barrel offering.
This barrel not only celebrates their union as brothers but symbolizes the dedication and commitment that the entire family of four generations shares in making and keeping Napa Valley paramount among wine growing regions.
Robert and Peter and their winemaking families invite you to share in this celebration by participating in the creation and nurturing of this barrel of 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon from the best of their vineyards. On Sunday, June 5th, 2005, the recipient and five guests will get their first review of this wine in its infancy. You will join Peter and Robert to take pleasure in tasting the nuances of this exceptional wine as it begins to take shape. This tasting will be followed by an intimate lunch hosted by Robert and Peter and their families at the home of Robert.
Come Spring of 2006, the recipient along with five guests, will once again join Peter and Robert to experience the progress of this exclusive barrel. Again, Robert and Peter will host lunch, at Peter's Charles Krug Winery private estate.
Once the aging in its French oak barrel has been completed, the wine will be bottled in 60 etched numbered magnums with a unique label depicting the union of these two Napa Valley icons. Every bottle of this collection will be personalized with an etched signature of each brother.
In August of 2006, the recipient and fifteen guests will join Peter and Robert for a grand celebration release dinner. Attending this dinner will be members of their respective families who are committed to continue the legacy established by Robert and Peter Mondavi of the Napa Valley.
